Three northern Gods in one ringed amulet.
This amulet ring has been inspired by the great temple of Uppsala in Sweden. The temple was a center of worship for three important Viking Gods, who are each represented in this unusual hand forged pure iron necklace. The hammer, Mjolnir, represents Thor, the spearhead, Gungnir, is a symbol of Odin and the sickle stands for Frey.... Wednesday, Thursday and Friday!

The Story
This is a large pendant and the miniature sickle and spear head are sharper than usual. I would recommend not wearing it whilst doing acrobatics or other high activity sports. I have made the amulets as blunt as possible, but there is only so much I can do with miniatures without losing definition on what the item represents.
The temple of Uppsala in Sweden was described by Adam of Bremen in the 11th century. Within it he witnessed three statues for the Viking gods Odin/Wodan, Thor and Frey. The post holes of the old temple can still be found under the church at Gamla Uppsala. This amulet ring has been inspired by the numerous iron amulet rings found all around Sweden from the Viking age. Most rings are much larger and contain tens of iron amulets, mostly hammers, shears, rings and discs. This amulet ring is not an exact replica of any find, but a modern interpretation paying homage to the old gods.
Each miniature weapon & tool has been hand forged individually out of pure iron bar. Working small scale can be a challenge for a smith as the metal cools down quicker and the smith has to be very precise with the hammer. This technical challenge is why as the maker I am happy on how good the little miniature sickle and spear turned out. I used archaeological evidence for the shape and proportions on the miniatures, except for the Thor's hammer which is a shape that those who have had a glance at my sold listings page know is a shape I am very familiar with. The amulet ring has been quenched in hot oil and then waxed to give it its black color, as well as to protect the iron from the elements.

Forge Black Iron
All iron will rust when it is exposed to moisture. Your body will keep the iron dry when it is worn, but wearing it will also start to rub off the protective layers.
We protect the iron by heating it in the forge until the surface goes black. The black oxide layer can be thick, but it is also brittle. It can flake off if the metal is bent.
After this we quench the iron into oil. The oil burns onto the surface and covers the black oxide with a glossy layer that repels moisture and helps hold the oxide in place.
The third layer is a beeswax based polish.
This is the one layer that needs to be re-applied more often, especially after wearing the pendant and before storing it. You can use a beeswax furniture polish or leather polish.
Waxing is more important when the black colour starts wearing off the pendant.

Cord options
LEATHER, round, 1.5 mm, is our most popular choice and is most in tune with the historical character of this pendant. We do our best to source the best quality cord as possible, but please be aware there is variation her we cannot control. This is why I will send you a replacement cord if it breaks within a year.
COTTON cord, 1.5 mm is strong. Because it is less likely to snap under tension, I do not recommend this option for children.
