This is the small version of our Ukonvasara, Hammer of Ukko, pendant. One of the few things we make that are Finnish in origin. There is more about hte symbol later on in the description.
This pendant, like all our ironwork, has been hand forged out of pure iron, not to be confused with steel or mild steel. The pendant is completely double sided. It has been suspended onto and adjustable length leather necklace.

The Story
The "Ukonvasara" is known widely as the Finnish Thor's Hammer. Ukko "Old man" was the name commonly used for the sky god, who governed over the weather, thunder, the crops & fertility and judgement. He was known as the "high god". Wether this is because of his physical placement in the sky or being the chief god of the Finnish Pantheon, is unclear. His help was asked when heavenly intervention or a sign was needed, on the battle field, in a trial by combat, hunting, giving birth or growing the crops.
The shape Ukko's hammer is different from its Scandinavian and Germanic counterparts. It is my supposition that the shape does not reflect a hammer like the Mjolnir, but a fire striker of a type yet unknown in the archaeological record. Such a iron would be useful when you need to strike a fire onto quartz stone without access to flint. On this type of "hammer" it is not the ends of the head that hit the target, but rather the curved edge skims of the stone. A lot of the bronze amulet Ukonvasaras have a zigzag, triangular decoration along the curve, indicating that the striking edge may have been serrated. This hammer is made of pure iron, so it is very unlikely to strike a spark.

Wearing iron jewellery
Iron, by its very nature is not permanent, but with care it can last for a lifetime. Our black iron pendants have three layers of protection, using the oldest methods in the blacksmith's book. Wearing the pendant will, with time, wear the black surface off. This is why we offer a refurbishment guarantee on all our pendants. For the cost of shipping we can restore the pendant to look as new for as long as we are working as blacksmiths.
I include more detailed care instructions with the pendant.

The Adjustable Necklace
The pendant is photographed on a dark brown 1.5 mm thick leather cord. We offer other options on the colour. Leather is a natural product, so there will be variation in the strength of the cord. If the cord fails within a year, I will send a replacement for free. For those of you who would prefer something stronger, we offer black round cotton cord.
The cord has been tied with two sliding knots. By moving the knots you can choose the position you want to wear the pendant.
If you choose to wear the pendant continuously, remember to feed or oil the leather to protect it from drying.
